We’ve all seen a dog asleep on the kitchen floor while its owner cooks dinner. This image is one of the most ordinary scenes in American life. According to research, for dogs, it is also a slow, steady exposure to industrial chemicals that we often don’t think about when it comes to our four-legged family. Our beloved dogs breathe what we breathe, only lower and closer to the floor, where compounds settle. And they do this for all hours of the day. When researchers at the University of Wisconsin took a closer look, they found these toxic chemicals had settled inside every single dog they studied.

The study, published this year in Frontiers, measured three volatile organic compounds—benzene, xylene, and 1,3-butadiene—in 60 golden retrievers. VOCs are chemicals that evaporate into the air at room temperature, which is precisely how they invade our daily lives. Not unknown poisons, these VOCs are the everyday off-gassing of modern indoor life, and all three are linked in humans to non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Guess what? Every single dog in the revealing study had all three of these toxins in its body. It did not matter if the dog lived close to a factory, in a busy city, or on a serene farm. They all tested positive for all three. The study authors strongly warned that owners actively work to reduce VOC exposure in their dogs’ lives.

The problem isn’t just that these chemicals exist inside the dogs. It is worse than that because they are also doing damage. In the lab, the team exposed healthy canine cells to benzene and xylene and observed that it damaged the dogs’ DNA directly, at low concentrations, which is what most dogs were estimated to be carrying in their blood. A companion study from the same group found that the dogs who went on to develop lymphoma showed more DNA damage beforehand, and that the damage was in line with their chemical exposure. This is not a study about a scary chemical in small amounts. No, indeed, the study is a warning about carcinogens present in every dog tested, at levels shown to break the strands of DNA that are meant to keep cells from turning cancerous.

So, where exactly do these chemicals come from? The answer should concern all pet owners. These VOCs don’t come from a spill, a factory, or a toxic site on the other side of town. They come from the house itself. The study authors stated it plainly, noting that gas stoves, oil- and gas-fired heaters, household paints and solvents, the glues in rugs and particleboard furniture, poor ventilation, some artificial air fresheners, and secondhand smoke are common culprits. In other words, the couch, the flooring, the cleaning cabinet, the linen-smelling plug-in, and the stove used to bake and cook dinner.

The stove itself deserves more focus, because the science on it is recent and quite damning. Researchers at Stanford discovered that a single gas burner on high or an oven set to 350 degrees can raise benzene levels inside a home to levels higher than those from breathing secondhand cigarette smoke. And the benzene does not stay in the kitchen. It drifts through the house, lingering for hours, seeping into bedrooms long after dinner is over and the dishes are done. One of the Stanford scientists explained that we would never willingly stand behind a running car and breathe its exhaust, yet we stand over our stoves and breathe the toxins they emit. And our beloved dogs lie on the floor beside us and breathe it even longer.

These studies underscore the reality that our dogs are much more than just loyal pets; they are also providing us with an unsettling warning about toxins in our homes. For years, Integrative veterinarian Dr. Karen Becker has described companion animals such as dogs as sentinels, the modern equivalent of the canary that miners once carried into the coal shaft. They did this because the canary’s smaller body and faster metabolism meant it collapsed from harmful air before the coal miners did, buying them extra time to escape. Dogs are doing the same thing for us now, in our homes. They share our exact environment, they age roughly seven times faster than we do, and they develop many of the same cancers that we do. Thus, dogs display in a handful of years what may take decades to reveal in humans, which means if the air inside our home is damaging the dog sitting on the floor, there is no doubt it is also reaching a child crawling on that same floor.

The obvious question—one we’ve been asking for years—is why are toxic chemicals allowed in our homes to begin with? Benzene in the stove and formaldehyde in the particleboard do not occur naturally. Using VOCs is an intentional choice driven by profit. Cheap chemicals are used by companies to save money and are allowed by our government because US safety rules only consider harm that is seen right away. Meaning, slow damage such as exposure to VOCs (that shows up years later as cancer) does not prohibit a toxic product from being sold without warning. The constant invisible exposure to toxins has been normalized to the point that a carcinogen drifting into our bedroom at night is simply how a house smells.

Do yourself and your dog a favor. Open the windows when cooking and crack one in the bedroom at night before sleeping. Look at induction stoves, which emit no VOCs. Don’t use plug-in air fresheners. Pay attention to how furniture and rugs are made. Ventilate with fresh air. As our dogs lie on the floor, they have no choice but to absorb whatever we’ve filled our homes with, and then get sick a few years ahead of us. Let’s listen to the warning.
