My sympathies go out to the editor who had to choose a headline for this video clip, as the conversation covers a broad range of topics and does not go very deep. I chose to watch this video because of the headline, and ended up having to wait until the 8:40 mark for the first mention of social credit scores. At this point, the video shows three articles, two of which directly pertain to social credit scores. Of these two, one is from August 2019 (nearly four years ago), and the other is from May 2022 and is primarily based on an interview with a director at a conservative think thank who talks about the potential for ESG scores to transition beyond companies and individual investors to the general population. Mr. Jaxen acknowledges that “we’ve covered this before,” and I’m familiar with The Highwire’s prior reporting on this topic. Therefore I assumed in reading the headline that there would be a report on the early signs of a transition of ESG scores to the general population. Nope. This is misleading. ESG scores for companies and individual investors did not just begin. The Highwire should be more careful in choosing headlines for reports such as this one.
At the time that I made the post above, the headline was, “SOCIAL CREDIT SCORES BEGIN IN THE WESTERN WORLD.”
